The Museum Group

A strong message to emerge from the Community Appraisal was the need for a museum for Pembroke.  Few towns can boast of a richer heritage than Pembroke, yet since the closure of  the excellent Museum of the Home, the town now has no museum. At the time of writing, it now seems likely that we may have a permanent home in the old Court Room in the Town Hall, by kind support of the Town Council.  Further developments will be posted here.

Despite this, there are two projects under way aimed at involving the community in the discovery our amazing past

The Story of Pembroke

In 2005 a project was conceived to tell the history of Pembroke through a series of carved stone friezes depicting stories of Pembroke through the ages, with bronze copies set at appropriate points on the Town Trail.

Local sculptor, Perryn Butler, was commissioned to carry out the sculptures , engaging the community to research the stories. With funding from Awards for All Wales, this was undertaken from February  to September 2006 culminating in an exhibition in the

Town Hall.  Funding for the friezes is now being sought.

Your Stmuseum logoory: a Living History Project

Led by Linda & Stuart Asman and Nikki Anderson, we are about to launch a new project to record memories of local people in Pembroke.  When many people think about history, they think about the broad sweep of national events, of kings and wars. In fact history is all around us, in our own families and communities, in the living memories and the experiences of older people. The late Victorian age is still within living memory of those elderly residents who remember their parents and grandparents and a way of life, which has all but disappeared. But it need not disappear altogether if we can capture those memories now and preserve them for future generations

The aim of this project is to build a sound and picture archive which will form the basis of a local history museum. With initial funding from Pembroke Town Council, we have been able to buy a laptop and scanner, which is to be used for copying old family photographs and pictures of Pembroke, as well as sound recording equipment.  All the equipment is portable so that interviews can be carried out in the home.  We are also being supported by the Pembrokeshire Museums Service, which is providing training and support:  they want to ensure that all the material we and other communities collect will form a county wide library of family and local history, held secure for future generations.

This is a big project and we want to recruit volunteers. And the great thing about it is that everyone can be involved, from the very old who have fascinating stories to tell to the very young who can be involved in collecting them.
