PEMBROKE MILLPONDS ACTION GROUP

The Pembroke Millponds Action Group (PMAG) was established in 2000 as a sub-group of Pembroke 21C. Its overall aims are:

To maintain and enhance the aquatic and related habitats of the millpond system

To maintain and enhance populations of protected and notable species

To enhance the educational and recreational value of the site

What makes The Millponds system so unique is its biodiversity:it progresses from a stream to a reed bed into a freshwater pond, then on to a brackish inter tidal pond and then into an estuary. Here we have a full range of habitats and species within a short distance.

UPPER MILLPOND

A freshwater pond consisting of open water and reedbed fed by the stream from Lamphey. It is leased by the Wildlife trust as a Reserve from the Crown Estates and can claim to be one of the best sites for wading birds in the County.

MAIN MILLPOND

Was originally an Estuary around Pembroke & completely tidal . Developments culminating in the barrage of 1970s have created a freshwater lake.

It is now a LNR owned by PCC & managed by committee with a Technical committee (consisting of CCW, Wildlife Trust for South and West Wales, PCC, PRT) to advise.

CASTLE POND

The Castle pond is fed by The Commons stream at Monkton bridge, the Millpond overflow and the incoming tide from Pembroke river SSSI. This makes the water brackish, a mixture of fresh and salt water.

This is not part of the Local Nature reserve because of recreational usage in the form of boating and water  sports.

THE HOLYLAND WOOD

This woodland is bordered by farm land and stream. The bottom of the wood is Carr leading into a reedbed.

Patnership was formed between 21C, the landowner and Cydcoed to make the woodland available to the general public. It is close to town, accessed at Kingsbridge on Holyland Road. Sections are suitable for disabled & disabled car parking will soon be available.
