ABOUT US
Mission Statement
Pembroke 21C exists to work closely with the whole community to provide a focus for activities that are open to all in order to encourage pride and community spirit in Pembroke in an environmentally and economically sustainable way.
Our more specific aims are to:
- provide a hub for community activities and projects
- improve social cohesion by encouraging community participation, working to build positive relationships and a common sense of belonging and social pride
- improve community facilities that are accessible and open to all
- develop confidence and skills by creating opportunities for all to take a useful role in their community
- champion individual self-esteem and achievement
- celebrate our culture and heritage
- reduce Pembroke’s impact on the environment
- enable a sustainable future for Pembroke
Pembroke 21C Community Association was established in 2000 as a result of a community led local action plan. It acts as an umbrella organisation for a number of groups established to implement the projects identified in the action plan and supported by the community. The action plan contained plans, projects and activities which the community had identified to regenerate the town and to improve the standard of life for those living and working in Pembroke.
Foundry House Community Centre
We have now realized one of our most important objectives: a community centre for Pembroke!
Originally a foundry (hence the name!), the building dates back to 1839: in its later life it was donated to the community as an amenity and more recently served as the local community education. In August 2005 Pembrokeshire County Council decided to implement their policy of selling community education premises and closed the building for community use in order to sell it on the open market.
On 21st March 2007 the building was purchased from Pembrokeshire County Council. Money was raised from the following sources: Welsh Assembly Government - Community Facitilies and Activities Programme, Chevron, Pembroke Town Council, RWE nPower and Community pledges.

It's ours! Putting up our sign!
Our aim of refurbishing Foundry House as Pembroke’s Community Centre is ongoing. This spring we have used the remainder of the Welsh Assembly Government Community Facilities and Activities Programme (CFAP) grant (received in 2006) to move the work forward. We have improved disabled access by widening doorways and installing a disabled toilet. We have improved fire safety by installing one-hour fire doors and a push bar fire exit at the rear. And we have repaired the roof to give it a few more years’ life, with new fascia boards and guttering, and inserted new windows to the old house. Most exciting for us and our regular user groups we have built wall to ceiling cupboards in the front hall providing us with much needed storage and meaning we can dispose of the plethora of metal cupboards all over the place.
So it is a start. We currently have a further funding application in to CFAP and another larger bid into The Big Lottery People and Places programme to provide the bulk of the monies still required to bring the building up to standard (see walk through of our plans below). We hope to hear the outcome of both these applications around the end of August this year. We have also applied to E.ON Source for a grant for the environmental aspects of the refurbishment – insulation, solar panels for hot water, air source heaters for the rooms and grey water recycling.
We will keep you informed through this website and Network. However, if you would like to contribute and have not already done so, our Buy A Brick Campaign is ongoing to raise much needed community support for the refurbishment programme.
In the meantime you are welcome to visit us any time – to call in for a chat or a coffee, buy a book or use one of our open access computers. To book space in Foundry House for activities or events please see below.
Acanthus Holden have been appointed by our Trustees to prepare plans for Foundry House. Their proposals are displayed in Foundry House for you to see but you can read about the planned conversion and take a virtual tour by clicking on the image below.
